Feast of Weeks

According to Leviticus 23, today we celebrate the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost.

Without getting bogged down in all the details, the Feast of Weeks is 50 days after The Feast of First Fruits, which occurs during Passover. All of these Feasts were given by God for us to remember His provision in the harvest. This was a time to honor God with sacrifices and offerings. But moreso, these rituals were designed to keep our hearts in the right place to remember Who provides for us. Like all ancient Jewish Feasts, these were a foretelling of God’s plan for mankind’s redemption and the Messiah to come.

If you remember, Yeshua was killed on Passover and rose again on the Feast of First Fruits. He became the first of what we are all called to become… the embodiment of human potential. 50 days later, on the day of Pentecost, the Feast of Weeks, the Holy Spirit was sent to the apostles.

These are not just random stories we see in ancient scrolls. These are real life concepts we see played out again and again. God is the Source of all love, all energy. The Holy Spirit is what empowers us and gives us the energy to DO God’s work in this world. It’s the generator, if you will. Its the battery. And on this day, we remember how God is not only IN all things but because of Yeshua’s work, the Holy Spirit can live IN us as well, in real time. We are empowered with the Spirit of God to do the impossible. To love others. To forgive those who seek to destroy us. To be present when we’re in pain. To create sacred space even when our lives are falling apart. To get through a debilitating illness. To find peace in a war zone.

Even if you’re not familiar with the Feast of Weeks or it’s not a holiday you’ve ever celebrated, that’s ok. We don’t need to be Jewish to honor the roots of our Judeo-Christian faith. To honor the parallels before and after Christ. We are intelligent enough to understand deep, spiritual truths and we can celebrate God’s redeeming work in our lives, regardless of where we find it. We can sit in gratitude today, remembering the harvest in our lives, where God has the sewn seeds that have grown ripe fruit.

What is YOUR harvest? What have you sacrificed in order to experience God’s blessings in your life? Where are you reaping the goodness you’ve sewn?
